Celebrating 10 years...
I woke up one morning in early January and realized that we introduced ACCTivate! to the market 10 years ago. Wow! Time flies when you're having fun!
Most of you probably don't know the story behind ACCTivate!. I had developed and brought to market several accounting products during the 70's and early 80's. When the IBM PC was announced the entire world of small business computers, all based on proprietary hardware, proprietary operating systems and proprietary programming languages, became almost instantly obsolete.
In reaction to the radical changes in software distribution channels I formed Alterity and switched focus to producing narrowly focused niche market products. We developed a number of products in the 80's and 90's (applications for telephony, RFID, computer assisted training, speech therapy, vocabulary training, and HR testing to name a few).
In 1997 I was asked by a customer to suggest a solution to the Y2K roadblock in their accounting software. I took a fresh look at the "usual suspects" for small business accounting and found that software prices had escalated to incredible heights to capitalize on the Y2K feeding frenzy creating a "gap" in the small business market with no affordable software.
We began work on ACCTivate! almost immediately to fill this gap. We initially chose CYMA Financial Accounting as our back-end. The beta testing started in early 1998. The first non-beta customer was installed in 1999 and general marketing began in 2000.
In the spring of 2003 Intuit announced an SDK that allowed for full bi-directional integration to QuickBooks. We made the decision to create a version of ACCTivate! for QuickBooks almost immediately, began beta testing in late 2003 and started general marketing in early 2004.
As we began selling, installing and supporting ACCTivate! in small businesses I realized how much I had missed working with entrepreneurs... I felt like the prodigal son who had come home again. Fortune 500 companies may buy more software at a higher price point and pay a higher rate for more services, but I prefer working with owner managers who have the same relationship with their business that I do with Alterity.
Thanks to all of you for supporting us over the past 10 years and for allowing us to share your business experience. Next time you have a piece of birthday cake think of us.
Kind Regards,

Ron Souder,
President & CEO

Customer Spotlight
ACCTivate! user since 2000 specializes in commercial trailer manufacturing
The Great 2000 Fort Worth Tornado hit downtown Fort Worth, Texas on March 28, 2000, one block from the Alterity office.
The Alterity office avoided damage, despite the tornado tearing a 4-mile path of destruction through the downtown area, blowing out windows and damaging many high rise buildings.
Alterity was operational the next day. Alterity staff even left to perform an on-site implementation for MCT Industries, Inc. that day. That makes MCT all the more memorable, but even greater is the fact that MCT was one of the first customers to install ACCTivate! and they have been using the system ever since. > more
