For those that haven't been to Alaska, I will let you in on a secret...

Alaska is a great place to visit. I have a goal that I will eventually visit all 50 states. My visit to that great northern state last month was number 49 and I loved it. I took the cruise on the inside passage and stopped in Ketchikan, Juneau and Skagway. Of course, the one day tourist stops hardly do Alaska justice. In keeping with our Park and Recreation theme, however, the glorious outdoors and vistas wherever we looked were worth the trip.

The ship that I was on, the Celebrity Infinity, took us right up close to a spectacular glacier. It is a sight that everyone should see in their lifetime. Our captain was able to get closer than usually possible for big cruise ships and the colors, the eagles swarming, the seals were all part of the scene. Of course the 38° F on the forward deck chilled my over-heated Texas bones, but it was worth it.

Frequently because most of us live in the hurly burly of big urban environments, we lose sight of how much of the great outdoors is still there for us to enjoy. Alaska, the small portion that I visited, reminded me of how much pleasure and excitement there is in nature. Incidentally I looked but I couldn't see Russia.
